Prioritizing outdoor time during the winter months can be a challenge. With colder temperatures and limited light hours, it‘s tempting to remain indoors. But the benefits of nature exposure, especially during the winter months, are a strong reason to get bundle up and head outside.
If you are looking for ways to increase nature exposure despite the colder months, here are a few tips.
Schedule an Outting
Put a hike on the calendar and invite friends. When we have a commitment, we are more likely to meet that requirement when we know someone is waiting for us. If you have children, invite other families to join you for a winter hike, a lantern walk (there are several in Switzerland), a sledding experience, or an afternoon of building a campfire and enjoying the natural world.
Another idea is to join a local hiking group or family-friendly group, such as the Nature Detectives organizaed by the Basel Children‘s Trust. This group is dedicated to meeting year round and it is always a pleasure to meet other families who are passionate about getting their children outdoors.
Have the Right Gear
The famous saying by Alfred Wainwright, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing," is very true. By investing in a solid baselayer (preferably a natural fiber such as wool) and a solid outer layer, you will remain warm despite the temperatures. Don‘t forget a good hat, gloves or mittens, and a good scarf are essential for lasting warmth.
Don‘t forget sunglasses that offer UV polarized for extra protection, especially if you will be hiking, running or participating in snow activities. The reflection off of the snow can be brutal for the eyes.
Wear sunscreen despite the colder temperatures, don‘t forget to stay hydrated.

There is no better way to increase your nature exposure than to plan a holiday immersed in nature. Skip the city and head to the Alps. With loads of hotels that cater to winter enthusiasts, it‘s never been easier to get outside. Tip:
If you are traveling with children, book them in the local ski school and enjoy a few hours each day skiing on your own, or snowshoeing on the well-marked trails.
