Cherry Hike Switzerland

Searching for the perfect spring hike doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, we recently discovered one of the most beautiful hikes not far from our city home in Basel. This hike is perfect for a slow weekend, when time is not rushed and you can leisurely meander through cherry orchards, up hills and through forests.

This cherry trail delivers in the way of beauty with plenty of blossoming cherry trees. In fact, this route had far more cherry trees than many of the other more popular routes. Pack a picnic lunch, your camera, and get ready for a gorgeous spring outing!

Good to Know:

  • The cherry blossom season is very short. We hit this trail on April 22 and the trees were still in bloom, however, we anticipate that they only had about a week or two left. This varies according to the year, temperature, rainfall, etc.

  • This hike is a mix of paths, trails and open plateaus.

  • The views were very impressive!

  • If you are looking for a meal or snacks, visit Restaurant Schönmatt or their small shop located in Gempen. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 09:00 – 18:00.

Be Aware:

  • There are no toilets along the route.

  • The route requires the use of a bus, which may not be your best option on a Sunday or a holiday. Check the bus schedule before your departure.

  • This route is not stroller friendly.

  • The hike is not difficult, but long. Make sure your children have plenty of energy for the 11+ km route.

  • Several sections are along a road or require road crossings. Please use caution.
